Step-by-Step Guide
How to Assemble a Print-at-Home PDF Sewing Pattern
Putting together a PDF sewing pattern can feel a bit overwhelming, but with a few simple steps, you’ll have it all laid out in no time. Here’s how to assemble it smoothly, in two different ways.
What You’ll Need
• Your printed PDF pattern pages (make sure they’re printed at actual size)
• Scissors or a paper cutter
• Tape or a glue stick
• A large flat surface for layout
Step 1: Understanding the Pattern Grid
Each page has a small triangle on the inner edge of each border. The letters (A-M) run along the rows, and numbers (1-7) mark the columns. Your goal is to match the triangles, so that the “A1” triangle on one page aligns with the “A1” triangle on the next, creating a full diamond. This alignment will create your complete pattern grid.
Step 2: Choose Your Assembly Method
You can use either of these two methods to align the pages:
Method 1: The Cut Method
This is the more common approach and works well for ensuring exact alignment.
1. Cut off the left and top borders of each page along the border lines (only the left and top borders!).
2. Lay out the pages in order, row by row, so that each corresponding triangle matches with the next.
3. Align and tape the pages together as you go. The triangles will form a diamond shape when aligned correctly.
4. Repeat for each row and column until the pattern is fully assembled.
5. Ensure that you place tape on all pattern edges that you will be cutting along so that the stay secured once the pattern is cut out
Method 2: The Fold-Under Method
If you prefer not to cut your pages, this method works well for a bit more flexibility.
1. Fold the left and top borders of each page back along the dotted lines.
2. Lay out each page in the correct order, folding the edges under so that the corresponding triangles align, forming diamonds as you go.
3. Tape or glue the pages together to keep the folds in place.
4. Continue until your pattern is fully pieced together.
Step 3: Double-Check Alignment
Once you’ve taped everything together, take a quick look to make sure all pattern lines flow smoothly across the pages. This is a good time to double-check any special markings or notches to ensure they align correctly.
Final Thoughts
With either method, you’ll have your pattern pieced together and ready to cut or trace! Remember, go row by row, keep your triangles aligned, and enjoy the process. Soon, you’ll be on to the fun part: sewing!
